The Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus has been around for years and is tried and tested. The Nautilus CC Plus has been very popular in past years, but are now past their prime and are overshadowed by more advanced models like the Dolphin Premier and Dolphin Sigma. With the latest technology such as gyroscopes, NanoFilters, Multi-Media, and wireless connectivity, the modern models are providing a new level of clean that the Nautilus CC Plus is missing.
Design and Features
To better understand the capabilities of the Nautilus CC Plus, let’s first look at its design and key features:
It’s built similarly to the rest of the models in the Nautilus line, with a low center of gravity and tracks instead of wheels. It has a tall handle that helps with retrieval from the water.
You’ll notice it has two brushes - one on the front and one on the back. More brushes are better for dislodging debris, but unfortunately this robot isn’t designed to reach and clean the tileline. While it can climb partially up the walls, it will not climb to the waterline and scrub tough debris, algae, and bacteria found at your waterline which leaves you to scrub it by hand.
Next up, the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus also has a 60 foot cable with an anti-tangle swivel. It’s designed to clean the floors and lower walls of pools as large as 50 feet.
The filtration system includes 1 set of standard filters. This is rather disappointing to see, as most modern robotic pool cleaners in the Dolphin ProLine, such as the Dolphin Quantum, Premier, or Sigma, at least include the Dolphin's NanoFilters. While it gets the job done for some medium sized particles, it leaves a lot of leaves, twigs, and even finer particles behind. When compared to the Dolphin Premier's Multi-Media Filtration with 3 filter sets included (Standard, NanoFilters, and Oversized Leaf Bag), it is rather disappointing to see the Nautilus CC Plus lacking these filter options.
Its power supply is simple with just 1 2-hour cycle option. It’s also programmable to schedule cleanings every day, or every 2 or 3 days.
Performance
Now, how does the Nautilus CC Plus actually perform? We tested it over a few days, and here’s what we discovered.
This unit is advertised as a wall climbing robot, but its wall-climbing capability is limited to only the lower wall. It’s not designed to clean the upper wall, even though it says wall-cleaning on its list of features. It climbed up a few feet up the wall on most cleaning passes, but it left the entire upper portion of the wall untouched. And there’s no way it could reach the dirty waterline of any pool.
This is a big concern, because the waterline is the dirtiest part of any pool. If you don’t clean it consistently, it’ll become a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, and biofilm. With that in mind, having an automatic pool cleaner that can’t come close to cleaning the dirtiest part of the pool for you misses the point of owning one.
The Nautilus CC Plus did an adequate job cleaning the floor. It vacuumed up about 85% of the visible debris. Although this unit had Clever Clean technology, it didn’t seem that clever. It missed some spots in the shallow end, and it got stuck on the stairs for so long that it shut off. It’s obvious that the CC Plus is missing some onboard obstacle avoidance. We’ve seen smarter models like the Dolphin Sigma and Dolphin Premier handle tricky spots like stairs and drains without getting hung-up.
Lacks Filtration Options
As for filtration, the Nautilus CC Plus is simple, but leaves you wishing it had more options. It has only has 1 filter media option, the standard filter. Testing the standard filter, it filled up pretty fast with medium sized debris. However, we were disappointed it left behind leaves, twigs, and smaller particles like sand and silt we had placed in the test pool.
We wish it included another filter option, as it left behind a lot that could have easily been picked up with a leaf bag or NanoFilters. Maytronics NanoFilter can clean down to 2 microns, which solves a bunch of issues the CC Plus has. And if you’re cleaning a very dirty pool, you’ll need to empty the filter several times before the pool will be clean.
If you get a lot of leaves in your pool, you should consider multi-media, which includes an oversized leaf bag option. This is standard on the Dolphin Premier, and 4 filter options can greatly reduce the frequency of cleanings.
No Technology and Connectivity
The Nautilus CC Plus is lacking in new technology and connectivity. It doesn’t have bluetooth or Wifi like the new Dolphin Sigma - the only thing you can automate is the timer on the power supply. There’s no full filter light, no cleaning cycle options, and no remote control or wireless connection option. Compare this to a modern design like the Dolphin Sigma, that even has its own app that lets you control virtually every feature from your phone, and the Nautilus CC Plus is woefully unconnected. Finally, the CC Plus comes with a warranty of 2.5 years, about 6 months shorter than most premium pool robots. This 20% shorter warranty can leave you with one less pool season without the peace of mind that your unit is covered.
Key Takeaways
If you’re considering the Nautilus CC Plus, these are the key takeaways.
Like most of the Nautilus line, the problem with the CC Plus is it can’t quite decide what it wants to be. It’s expensive for a robot that mainly cleans the floor and doesn’t have modern connectivity and technology. It just can’t offer the true, modern value of a robotic pool cleaner like the new 2024 Dolphin ProLine can, which allows a hands-off, automated cleaning of every inch of the pool’s surface.
It won’t clean the dirtiest part of your pool - the waterline. In fact, the Nautilus CC Plus leaves a lot of surface area untouched that you’ll have to scrub manually. Modern designs like the Dolphin Quantum, on the other hand, scrub every inch of the wall for you.
For the price, you’re a lot closer to a robotic pool cleaner that does all the dirty work for you than you might think. There are many other Dolphin options worth considering. We recommend choosing a unit that’s more modern, powerful, and customizable.
The Dolphin Quantum costs a little more and outperforms the CC Plus in every category. It’ll climb all the way to the dirty tile line, and covers the entire wall, not just the lower portion. Right after the Quantum, you’ll find the Dolphin Premier with full wall coverage, waterline cleaning, MuliMedia, plus a 3 year warranty. But for the best of the best, you can invest in the Dolphin Sigma, which adds bluetooth, wifi, and a customizable smartphone app. You’ll enjoy smartphone navigation, smartphone scheduling, remote troubleshooting, and more. It also delivers the most precise coverage ever thanks to a gyroscope. It’s currently the best-in-class robotic pool cleaner on the market today.
