Dolphin Proteus DX4 Review

An In-Depth Review by Robert Knight

Introduction

Introducing the Dolphin Proteus DX4, a pool cleaning robot from the reputable Dolphin Proteus line. Having borne witness to its proficiency over three months of rigorous testing, we can confidently attest its worth. This smart device comes packed with advanced features that not only ensure cleanliness but also guarantee optimal pool health. Dolphin Proteus DX4 goes an extra mile thanks to its strong suction and scanning capabilities, an easy-to-clean filtration system, and its impressive ability to scrub the pool floor, walls, and waterline.
Over this period of testing, the DX4 never eased up on performance. Not once. The most commendable thing is how it continually delivered first-rate cleaning without the need for regular extensive maintenance. From weeks one to twelve, it was a robot on a mission. A mission to clean.
Sadly, however, the DX4 does not come without some minor drawbacks. Despite its laudable performance, issues such as getting caught on the main drain or occasional inconsistency with wall-climbing cropped up during our testing. This, however, doesn't overshadow the fact that the Proteus DX4 stands as a formidable option for pool cleaning.
If you are searching for a pool cleaning robot that delivers a thorough clean, ensures longevity, and does not drill a hole in your wallet, then the Dolphin Proteus DX4 is a choice to consider. However, if the minor setbacks discourage you, the Dolphin Premier from the Dolphin ProLine is a higher-end alternative you could explore. With its uncompromised cleaning capabilities and extra features, the Dolphin Premier truly takes pool cleaning to another level.

Pool Types

The Dolphin Proteus DX4 pool cleaning robot is ace of spades in the hand of any in-ground swimming pool owner. This digitized pool cleaner, able to cover up to 40 ft in range, is celebrated for its tenacity and adaptability across diverse pool materials. It hustles impressively through gunite, fiberglass, vinyl, and liner with comparative ease, leaving no trace of debris behind.

Characterized by its advanced navigation system, it's designed to handle not only the common rectangular pool shapes but also embraces oval and freeform pool structures. This level of versatility allows the Proteus DX4 to provide comprehensive cleaning regardless of your pool's unique shape.

In essence, the Dolphin Proteus DX4 is an all-round champ for anyone seeking an automated cleaning utility indifferent to variances in pool form and material. This robotic cleaner stands out for its unstinting commitment to keeping your in-ground pool spotless and inviting.

Pool Coverage

The Dolphin Proteus DX4 boasts impressive cleaning coverage. Unlike many others in its class, this robotic cleaner is adept at cleaning both the floor and walls of your pool, making it a comprehensive solution for pool owners. Its high-performance standards allow it to sweep and scrub different types of pools, regardless of their shape or size.
The DX4 has been designed to clean the waterline as well, ensuring a well-rounded cleaning experience that leaves no area left untouched. Whether your pool has a sleek, flat design or a unique, intricate layout, the DX4's advanced navigation technology can take on the job with minimal manual input.
Its powerful suction capacity coupled with high-quality brushes delivers a spa-like finish to your pool, correcting grime and algae overgrowth on all surfaces. Summing up, the Dolphin Proteus DX4 promises thorough cleaning coverage that suits a wide variety of pools.

Filtration

The highlight of the ProLine series, without a doubt, is its groundbreaking NanoFiltration ability. To tell you the truth, my appreciation of this feature stems from personal experience. My eyes bore witness to its superior functionality. Its prowess with deep cleaning surpasses that of any other pool robot I have ever tested.
My experience with the ProLine robot was quite transformative. I watched as it went about its task with remarkable finesse. It’s no exaggeration to say that the depths of my pool acquired a polished gleam that I had not observed with the use of other pool robots.
Now, one might question why this NanoFiltration feature stands out so much. However, once you see the results I've witnessed firsthand, such doubts tend to disappear. The ProLine robot does not just filter; it is designed to go deep, ensuring that the cleanliness of your pool is not just superficial.
Imagine stepping into a pool knowing that every unseen corner and unexplored depth has been diligently attended to. That’s what ProLine robot's NanoFiltration ability brings to the table. Conclusively, it's not just the breadth of the pool that the robot covers; it's also the depths it reaches, transforming it into a cleaned masterpiece.

Cleaning Performance

Right off the bat, the robotic pool cleaner showcased impressive functionality in our test pools. Powering through all types of debris, the device left no stone unturned, providing an immaculate cleanliness that was not just visibly evident but even felt remarkable to the touch. Its swift and meticulous operation is facilitated by high-grade navigation and intelligent sensing technologies.
The maneuverability of the device was another highlight. It easily climbed the walls, reaching the most stubborn and traditionally challenging areas without the slightest hesitation or resistance. The pool cleaner even demonstrated an adept proficiency in combatting algae, which is often a problematic factor for several robotic pool cleaners in the market.
The standby feature comes handy, especially for extended cleaning cycles. On average, a single cleaning cycle took a couple of hours, which, for the quality of cleanliness delivered, might not seem too long. However, the standby feature allows you an added layer of convenience - something few other robotic pool cleaners currently offer.
Talking about convenience, the weekly timer function deserves a special mention. It takes the hands-off convenience to a new level, allowing you to preset the cleaning schedule for an entire week. Amidst your busy schedule, if pool cleaning is something you easily forget about, this feature would be a boon. With the help of the weekly timer, you can rest assured that your pool would be immaculately clean at all times, without requiring any constant oversight.

Cordless

In the realm of robotic pool cleaners, one attribute often goes underestimated: the power source. In particular, whether the robot is corded or cordless. Over the years and after testing more than a hundred robots, I've developed quite a fondness for corded models, and here's why.
Corded robotic pool cleaners offer an uninterrupted power supply. They retain a constant high level of energy to effectively and efficiently clean swimming pools. There's no need to regularly check on the device's battery status or recharge it - making them a naturally preferable choice over Cordless counterparts.
I have discovered in my years of reviewing that, notably, corded cleaners significantly outperform cordless models. This is understandably so given the power consistency; corded models work tirelessly, ensuring every square inch of the pool is spotless.
Now, If I dig deeper into cordless robots, their limitations are self-evident. Yes, they might seem convenient and easy to use, but their power and operation time significantly lag. The pitfall of frequently recharging and interacting with them is an avoidable inconvenience. Furthermore, their lifespan often short compares to corded pool cleaners.

Weekly Timer

In the world of robotic pool cleaners, a phenomenal feature roundly appreciated by users is undoubtedly the weekly timer. This fantastic attribute allows you to easily set up a cleaning schedule for your pool, thereby, significantly simplifying maintenance and relieving you from the daily worries of pool cleaning.
Every robotic pool cleaner model, in our opinion, should have this feature. Not just for the mere convenience it brings, but also for underpinning the automation aspect that sets robotic pool cleaners apart from manual pool cleaning methods.
Regrettably, not all models come along with this feature. While evaluating various robotic pool cleaners, we certainly give preference to those fitted with weekly timers. It's partly biased, but consider the fact that the essence of investing in a robotic pool cleaner is to have most of the work done for you.
In essence, a weekly timer fosters automatic pool maintenance where the machine conducts set cleaning cycles throughout the week on its predefined schedule. Thus, the convenience it advances to users is immeasurable and it cannot be overstated how much of a game-changer this has been in the world of robotic pool cleaners.

Overview

When it comes to robotic pool cleaners, the Dolphin Proteus DX4 is a formidable contender. It's engineered by the widely trusted Maytronics brand, a manufacturer synonymous with pool cleaning technology. This robotic dynamo caters to the needs of in-ground swimming pools, with features that prove its rank within the Dolphin fleet. The Dolphin Proteus DX4
boasts a robust design, coupled with sophisticated cleaning technology that ensures it doesn't miss a spot in its cleaning routine. Equipped with CleverClean technology, the DX4 maneuvers through your pool with an advanced level of precision, mapping out its path to ensure efficient cleaning patterns. It also has an impressive 2.5-hour cycle time, providing a thorough clean for pools up to 50 feet in length. What also sets the Dolphin Proteus DX4 apart
from its peers in the robotic pool cleaner arena is its fine and ultra-fine dual filtration system. This capability ensures that both large debris and fine particles are targeted and eliminated, leaving your pool looking pristine and ready for use. Despite being a corded model, users have found that the 60-foot floating cable of the DX4
barely presents any tangling issues. This allows it to deliver continuous performance without interruption. It also offers the convenience of a weekly timer - simply program your preferred cleaning routine and let the DX4 take care of the rest. While it might not boast some of the more advanced features found on top-tier models, such as smartphone compatibility, the Dolphin Proteus DX4 remains a solid choice, particularly for those seeking reliable cleaning performance and easy maintenance.
In conclusion, the Dolphin Proteus DX4
is a testament to the consistent quality Dolphin models offer. It strikes a balance between important features and affordability, making it an excellent choice for pool owners who are in search of a high-performance, reliable, and durable robotic pool cleaner. So Easy to Use and Clean!

Mary H - Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2022

After spending a lot of money on different vacuums that did not work as stated, I decided to enlist the recommendations of friends. After taking a poll, the Dolphin Proteus DX3 was the clear choice. So, I decided to purchase it and the vacuum arrived the next day. I took it out of the box, read the super helpful directions and I was cleaning the pool in no time. I was impressed with the amount of water that the Vacuum itself moved, as well as the amount of debris it sucked up! The vacuum even climbed the sides of my above ground pool! The fact that it plugs in, means there is no waiting for the battery to recharge after each use. It is always ready to go! I use it once a week and the pool has never been so clean! It has been the best money I have ever spent towards pool maintenance! I am very pleased with how easy the vacuum is to clean out, as well. The entire basket lifts out so the contents can easily be disposed of and the entire unit can be hosed off quickly and efficiently. please note, It is important to keep the vacuum level as you take it out of the pool so the contents of the basket do not dump back into the pool. A minor detail, but one I wasn't aware of until after some trial and error! Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. My only regret is not buying this vacuum, at the beginning of summer!

My life just got easier.

Bruce Eichhorst - Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022

After years of owning and repairing my trusty Kreapy Krauly, it just wasn't getting the job done. I was at the mercy of the pump's suction. Everything seemed to effect it from dirty filter sand, cracked hoses, worn out flipper, hose plate movement, etc.....etc, I began shopping for it's replacement. Be someone who love my toys, I looked at the higher end free standing models. At first I looked at the Battery operated ones but worried about the customer complaints about not having enough charge to fully clean the pool. I then looked at the different "Corded" models and worried about the small filters since I have several trees and spend much time with the leaf skimmer. The DOLPHIN Proteus DX4 doesn't have the filter panels like most of the basic cleaner. It has a large basket with a trap drawer that opens easily and takes less than a minute to clean and drop back in and is ready to go again. I also worried about lifting the unit out of the pool but this 65yr old Arthritic patient handles it with ease. I did purchase the Caddy and cover which allows me to wrap up the cord and protect it from the elements when not in the pool plus makes it easier to move out of the way so the patio doesn't look cluttered. I used to leave the kreapy in the pool 90% of the time so that it would be ready when the pump came on but had to remove it when we wanted to swim. I only put this in for the purpose of cleaning but can leave it in if I don't get back to it. One problem I have noticed is that the "Scrubbing Brushes" have loosened the mineral deposits left by our city's famous hard water, leaving behind a fine silt at the bottom of the pool. The included "Fine" filter doesn't trap it. They do offer an "Ultra Fine" filter that looks like the material from an auto air filter. It has done the job perfectly. Leave that would clog up the suction cleaner are no problem for this gem. A bit of an investment but so far, Happy with my extra leisure time not cleaning the pool.

well collection of rough objects but dead algea.

Bulent Soylu - Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022

it's collecting debris and rough objects very well. No hassle for pipes etc. No charging issue. It can be scheduled as well. But when your pool becomes green of algae and you chlorinate your pool, Dead algae will be accumulated at the bottom of pool. This gear can not remove them at all. It's just relocating them but they hang again in water and you're waiting for a long time the water to be circulated and filtered by the pump. control panel is not water proof. My fuse blown once and I tried to protect it with some other container etc. I've already tried those chargeable robotics no way, this with cable one no way. ordered now the skimmer installed pipe ones. Yes it's not hassle free, each time you need to connect them , fix them into the skimmer. We'll see the result for this one.

Great for cleaning debris from pool bottom

brenda emery - Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022

Simple to set up and use. We have a 16 x 32 inground pool that needs frequent cleaning. We use them Dolphin normally once a week to get leaves and other debris off the bottom. It does a great job of doing this with the exception of algae. I noticed when it is cleaning the safes of the pool it kicks on a top jet to keep them Dolphin against the pool wall and an additional jet to propelled it sideways. When using these jets, algae that is picked up off the sides or bottom is expelled through the jets and back into the pool. To be more efficient the jets should use a separate source than the filtering basket. I still like using the Dolphin since its does a great job of cleaning the sides of the pool and larger debris (leaves) off the bottom. It will be very useful in the fall when the leaves start falling.

Great machine but blue cord is not going to hold up

Matthew S - Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022

I’ve wasted a LOT more $$ on much more expensive cleaners (Polaris & others) and there is no better bang for the buck than this DX3. However, after 6 months the blue power cord is showing severe signs of deterioration and I don’t expect it to last. I ALWAYS purchase an Amazon 2-year warranty on these as they ALWAYS die right around that time. Don’t waste your money on machines that are 2-3x the price of this one - they are all pretty much built the same and last only about 20-23 months. This machine’s Achilles heel is the blue power cord not being made durable enough (deteriorating), and the cord also not including a self-spinning 360° attachment that prevents it from binding up

Works well, but didn't exceed my expectations

Amazon Customer - Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2022

The robot does a pretty good job, but to be honest I'm a little let down in the overall performance given the price I paid. Before I purchased this robot, I was manually cleaning my pool just about every other day. I did it frequently just to stay ahead of it. I have some overhanging trees that tend to drop little leaves and pods regularly so every morning there is just a little dirt that needed to be sucked up. I bought this vacuum to save me some time during swim season. Before I first used the robot, I let the dirt in the pool accumulate for about a week or two. I really wanted to test the robot's capabilities right out of the box as I was anxious to see if it lived up to the hype. After the first cycle (it runs for 2 hours then shuts off, not 3 like the manual says) there was still more dirt on the bottom than what I would have liked to have seen. I ran it 2 more time (total of 6 hours) and the bottom was pretty clean, but not spotless. Over the next week, I put it on a daily run schedule and was pretty pleased with the result. The pool wasn't spotless, but it was 95% there, and given the time I saved not doing it manually, I'm happy with the purchase. One thing I should note (as stated in the manual): The robot doesn't have any sort of memory that helps in cleaning your unique pool. I assumed it would "map" my pool each time it was turned on so that it would be more efficient each time I used it. IT DOES NOT DO THIS. Every time it turns on, it starts with a clean slate as if it was cleaning my pool for the first time.

Really did a good job!

Cyndil's Mommy - Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2022

We have had the Dolphin for about a week now. The water in our pool was literally green since we weren't able to maintain it without the cleaner. We have run it several hours a day and to our surprise it has cleared the water up. It picked the dead algae and well as chlorine residue of the bottom of the pool. We were concerned it wouldn't be able to do this but in about 4 days it was back to blue! We live in Texas with very hot humid weather. Shocking the pool is a regular required maintenance and when the algae falls to the bottom it needs to be vacuumed out or it just builds up. We had a Polaris for many years and it along with the pump was pooped out. It also just stirred the algae up and made the pool cloudy so it was good to see we could clean the pool without going through the pump. The only reason I gave it 4 stars because it does not clean steps well so we still have to sweep those but everything else has been working very well. We are very satisfied. Also the filters that came with it are small enough to catch small particles so no other ultra fine filters were needed.

Let me tell you, we got the DX4 on a Saturday. It had trouble cleaning at first for more than an hour, then it was a half hour then only lasted 10/15 minutes - this was through that one day Saturday, just wouldn't stay cleaning the 2 hrs it was supposed to. Emailed the Amazon seller, emailed the manufacturer. First thing Sunday morning had an email from the Manufacturer. Odd answer, said motor may need to be 're-seated' due to shipping, sent me an instructional video, seemed a bit intimidating and weird, but tried it. Low and behold! It actually worked and was a simple fix. Yeah yeah, you spend all this money on it and shouldn't have to disassemble the thing but hey, it worked, better than sending the thing back - it's a cool robot! Anyway, has been working since and its been a month. Ok, so the Amazon seller contacted me after the whole ordeal - said I could send it back - well what the heck! I already fixed it! Nix that. Ok, on to the next issue. The power pack seemed to 'bubble' up over the push controls. Not good. Can still put the robot into action, but cannot choose any other option. Well emailed manufacturer again. They will be sending a new power pack out - once it is in stock - we'll see how long, it's been a week now, but hey, the thing is still working for what I need it for right now. I'll update on the shipping situation once it does come in. They did tell me it could take a while, so whatever. They are awesome to deal with - manufacturer I mean :) - be sure to register your robot as soon as you get it. We love it so far even with the bumps involved~ *update 6/13/22 - received the replacement power pack. Looks good, hoping it stays that way! DX4 still working amazing!

Works well initially

JWH - Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2022

I've had it one day and it has worked well, in general. I posted a question here about whether the DX3 is supposed to have the "foam climbing rings" the instructions said were important but which were not installed. I went to Dolphin customer service and learned a day later by email that the DX3 does not come with foam climbing rings and that they'll notify their own marketing department not to put that page of instructions in the box. Well, yeah. One point off for having erroneous instructions in the box and delaying my start. Later I'll either raise or lower the score. The first cleaning cycle took under three hours - small pool - and got most of the bottom; I can see a few spots that it didn't cover. It did a good job on the curve where the pool bottom and sides join. It got a small portion of the sides and waterline, but not nearly a third. I t did get up on the swim-up seat and did a little there. It tried to do stairs but gave up the second time it almost tipped over; I wasn't expecting it to do stairs or swim-up seat. I think it's necessary not to judge its coverage on any one pool cleaning, but rather wait until five or six cycles and then judge what it has covered. So far - pretty good. Still works well after a couple of months. It deserves five stars so I've added one. It seems to climb well without the foam climbing rings.

Solid Unit

Brian T - Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2022

Overall, does a very good job. It seems that where my pool has curves, it does not clean up as well and leaves a little debris. I had a CC Plus with dual rollers that did a better job. But overall, the pool is really clean and I just brush the remaining items. No regrets and a solid unit. Super easy to clean. Do have to be careful when retrieving from the pool as I have accidently opened the filter door a few times which spills into the pool. Once you learn how to grab it, not so bad.

Loving this pool vac so far!

I've used this pool vac 3 times so far. Our pool is 16 x 32 inground liner pool. We also have a "walking" ledge around the deep end. I thought the ledge would cause the pool vac trouble, but it really didn't. The vac catches all the yuk from the bottom of the pool in the filter basket (one that came with the vac, not the micro filter). I LOVE that the handle pops up when you open the vac. Not kidding-who wants to stick their hand in to find a handle? My vac filter basket didn't close properly (the bottom wouldn't 'snap' closed. I called Dolphin and they are sending out a new filter basket. Great customer service. I registered my vac the first day I received it. When I called cs about the filter basket, she answered the phone and addressed me by name. (Love that!) We have a collapsing skimmer line so needed to find a way to vacuum our pool that didn't need our skimmer/pool filter, so this was a perfect solution. I purchased the universal caddy too, although I wish my vac fit better on it. (See separate caddy review.)

Easy to use/operate and good vacuume

Papa_of_4 - Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2022

I was little hesitant to spend $650.00 for a pool vacuum, but I was very pleasantly surprised how good of a vacuum DX3 model was. I read couple of negative review about not working or it does a wheelie on the pool floor and does not vacuum the debris from the pool floor. That was not the case with the one I got. I didn't close our pool all winter and kept the pump on when temp got near or below freezing temp (I had the heat tapes around the pipes) just to keep the water movement. So naturally, my skimmer collected some blown leaves, small tree limbs and debris, so I had to keep my skimmer clean all winter. I tried to keep the pool free from debris as much as I could using the net, but by the time March, April came along, I had some algea looking thing visible on the bottom of the pool. First few times of the vacuum use (in mid May), I would empty the vacuum filter maybe every 30 min, just to keep the filter clean. But after the initial "Spring clean" phase, I would let it do it's thing just one cycle a day. I really don't even need to vacuum everyday, but I just like the way the pool looks after the vacuum does one cleaning cycle. It picks up sands, little rocks, bugs, and pretty much anything that can fit thru the vacuum opening on the bottom of the machine. I'm very pleased with it. We have 33 X 16 inground pool. Not huge, but big enough for us. :)

Our New Pool Friend

Lake Guy - Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2022

I’ve never left a product review, but I’m 2 margaritas into a slow weekend and ready share my one year relationship with this little guy… Does he take 4 hours to do what you could do with a net in 30 minutes? yes. Does he pass over leaves, missing them by millimeters and moving them 1 foot out of the way? yes. Does he do wheelies in the middles of your pool floor for no reason? Guilty as charged. But somehow, after 2-4 hours he has our pool floor spotless, including sand and small particles we’d never grab with the pole and net. I did a time study (minus the margaritas) and determined that over the course of a week, between manual pole and net vs. this guy, this guy saves about 30 minutes after set up, (2) 2-hour cycles and cleaning the basket twice a week. But the value of “set it and forget it” and getting on with your life while he does his thing far outweighs the hour of “reaching scooping” leaves and debris each week. I will caveat this by admitting our pool is practically a commercial property with the number of visitors we host each month in Florida, so your cleaning needs may not be as strenuous as ours. For the price and value this guy is a strong “buy!”

We should have done this years ago. No more standing in the sun for an hour sweeping the pool. Just set it in, plug it in, and come back later to unplug it, lift it out, and hose it off (the filter). It seems to go around the pool with no rhyme or reason, but it cleans the whole thing. Our pool is vinyl, in ground, 3 to 6 feet deep and the deep end is hopper shaped. "Rosie" has no trouble going up and down the slopes of the hopper. We've had no trouble with the cord tangling. Let's just hope it lasts. The DX3 is one of the cheaper ones, but still an investment.

The control panel is water resistant not water proof so it has to be be taken down after each cleaning as I have to stretch it out into the elements to have enough line to reach our small pool. So using the settings to set up automatic cleanings is not an option. The other issue is the cord is light and twists/tangles up with every cleaning. It does have good suction power and is easy to clean. The latch on the basket seems to be getting worn. Will have to see if it holds up.

So for a week straight the filter was pumping all the sand into my pool. Every last piece. 6lbs of Sand in my pool later and after three days of constantly vacuuming and filling my pool back up with water I decided to buy this vacuum. In just a week twice a day this vacuum cleaned my pool spotless! It was soo cloudy and this little robot gave us our pool back. He would run for 2 hours and be so easy to clean when he got full. 10/10 approve of this product. We now put him in once a week and he climbs the walls and everything still. It does not talk to your phone, it does not connect to blue-tooth, it does not make you coffee, but what it does do, clean the bottom and sides of your pool, it does fantastically well. And that is why I bought it. It is not clear in the description that it actually comes with the fine mesh basket, but it does, which was important to me because of the fine sand that gets into my pool living in the desert. It is built very well and the plastic and all components feel very high end quality. I drop my submersible in my pool, plug it in, press the power button and two hours later the pool bottom is immaculate. Why in the world did I struggle for nine years with a manual vac set up? Well engineered, easy maintenance, basket removes and cleans easily and my pools never looked better. I unboxed and dropped it in the pool, it ran about 20 minutes and stopped. I pulled it out and pine needles were visible in the discharge, I didn’t have one of the filters locked into place and it dislodged enough to cause junk to get where it shouldn’t. The impeller can get jammed with debris and sand grit can get into the drive where the motor assembly meets the drive system this is both normal and although infrequent planned for the robot disassembles with a Phillips screw driver and 6 screws in a few minutes for easy cleaning. The power transformer and cord are also easy to test with a volt meter. After cleaning mine it’s run half a dozen two hour cycles without a hitch and done a good job of coverage on my pool even with the irregular sides, seats and steps. So, I give this 5 stars because there’s not much to go wrong the mechanics aren't complicated, I think it the easiest appliance I’ve ever worked on and it cleans my pool like I would expect. Additionally the local pool supply recommended this model to me as the easiest to repair with the fewest problems.

Very simple to put into pool, remove from pool. NO tangling of hose. Please purchase the dolly and cover....which makes it so easy to protect and move the unit. The control panel is one button push and it takes off, then shuts itself down at end of cycle. You can program the control to do daily, weekly, odd days. NO, we have no connection to Maytronics, we are just very happy users...............See below why we are so happy. NOTE: WE LEARNED TO TURN OFF YOUR POOL PUMP, JETS ETC. - when there was no ports blowing out pool water and to stir up the pool floor, the unit then picked up even more. After 9 years of fighting a Polaris, it was trashbin time. The Polaris, midline unit, came with as part of the pool purchase. For the first 3 months, worked pretty, except tangling of hose. I wish that I had two filter boxes so that I could choose the appropriate one to use. Also would like the model with gps. The model I have cleans randomly. The pool cleaner does not preform to my expectations. I have been using the Proteus DX4 for 2 weeks now. My pool is a 16x30 plaster pool. 10 feet of it is a 16” deep sun ledge. The pool cleaner will not clean this area. It will climb up on the ledge and then back off of it into the deeper part of the pool. With this in mind, it’s only attempting to clean a 16’x20’ pool. The proteus will randomly run around the pool area with no particular pattern climbing the wall occasionally and often in the same area that it has already been. Never has it even climbed many parts of my walls and water level areas. There are parts of the pool floor that it never goes and many areas that it goes over numerous times in a 2 hour cycle. It does a lot of wheelies and blows debris around on the floor of the pool. Today the vacuum got stuck 5 times on the drain. Speaking of the drain, Your drains need to be cut off or your drain will suck all of the debris that the vacuum has picked up out of your Proteus basket. Today the drain was cut off but still got stuck 5 times. I called customer service and the lady was no help. I ask if she has a better model that she could recommend and she said that the Proteus was one of the best that they have and only offered for a technician to take a look at it if I wanted to send it back, but sounds like it’s doing all it was designed to do. 🙈. I must admit that I am pretty OCD and retired out of the medical field where I was used to high quality and expected products to preform superior. It’s time Dolphin gets up to date with pool ledges and modern day pool designs. Would I buy again. No

Best Purchase I Have Ever Made for My Pool

CyberBobbert - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 21, 2021

What can I say? I'm beyond impressed with this robot. I have been in the "pool world" for decades. My family had a pool, my wife and I worked in the pool business for a while and we have a lovely 8 year old Doughboy pool ... but never in all those years did we ever use a "robot", I didn't know what I was missing! PROS: * The Price. I have been shopping for various units and the prices for "larger pool" robots were over $1,000, and at the price we paid ($849 - 5% Amazon Store Card Credit), it is a STEAL. * It Freekin' Works. Look, I love my pool, and don't really mind vacuuming it, but as the season progresses and more leaves and dirt get in the pool, it really became a drag to do it. I can say without hesitation, that I will probably never have to vac the pool again! When we opened the pool, the water was clear but there was some "gunk" and algae on the bottom. We put this in (Using the pleated filters) and within no time it was CLEAN * It Cleans The Walls, Water Line and "Corners". The one job I truly hate in the heat of the summer, is catching / scrubbing those pesky occasional "algae spots" that sneak up on the walls. This unit cleans the floor, the coping, the edges and climbs the walls to clean all the way up to the water line. SO far, no algae spots are in the pool. * EASY To Clean and Maintain. Just pull out the unit, open it up, empty the "basket" and wash off the filter panels with a hose. Takes a few minutes! * The Dog Loves It. Our Dachshund loves to sit by the pool and watch it work ... and so do I :-) CONS: * Wish There Was More Run Time Options. I knew going in that this unit does not have the bluetooth features the higher models have, but I would like the ability to run the unit more than once a day OR run a little longer. This is the only "con" I have so far! * Manual Was a Bit "Lacking". There were some questions I had about the product that were not answered in the manual since parts of it were "universal" to all of their units (including do not remove the foam circles on the cleaning roller ... this unit didn't have those ... and it took me 5 minutes to have realized there was an asterisk in the manual saying "not all units have these". Minor thing. Bottom line? If you are looking for a robot cleaner, do yourself a favor and snag this DX4 (or any in this line) and I guarantee that you will LOVE not sweeping your pool during the season!

Design Issues

The good: *Large collection basket that’s much easier to clean than previous years models. *Thinner anti-swivel cord helps prevent tangling. *Unit will purge air on its own, so you can just drop in pool. *Water line cleaning is excellent. The Bad: *Controller/PSU is not water proof. Maytronics support says it should be kept out of rain, their suggestion was keep it off the ground and cover with plastic. *Controller/PSU has a short cord and the manual says not to use an extension cord. Support says you can use up to a 10’ heavy duty extension cord. *My pool (18’x36’) is standard distance from house and power outlet. Even hanging the controller/PSU on a deck that is fairly close to pool with a 10’ extension, the cleaner cord barely has enough to reach entire pool. *it avoids cleaning one corner of the pool for some reason. *Cleaner gets hung up on low profile floor drain, if the basket is carrying a certain weight it won’t break free. *Has trouble picking up sand caught in liner creases. Not sure what they were thinking with the Controller/PSU design. How do you make one for an outdoor pool cleaner that is not waterproof, especially when it provides a function to schedule cleanings? And they should provide a much longer cord or design for use with longer extension cord or bump up the cleaner cord from 60’ to 80’.

I used it for about 3weeks, went on vacation, came home on July 1st dropped it in the pool and turned it on. It ran one cycle, when I went to run it for a second cycle the brain was dead. I checked the GFIC receptacle it was good and on, I plugged a fan in the same receptacle so power coming in was Not a problem. So, freaking out I came in and checked Amazon …. This was the last day for a return. I sent a return request in and Amazon approved the return. So, first thing July 5th I dropped it off at UPS. As of this date I have not heard from the manufacture. So, I will give it a little longer before I freak out, I don’t know about you, but $700 bucks is a lot of money. Now for the machine itself. If you have had an old AquaBot this is not as powerful, but it did the job but again if you are looking for something that will break the water line and scrub your tiles this is not for you, if you can live without that this should work for you. Now have own two AquaBots the controller on them were massive medal boxes compared to this controller, but they all seem to be going that way. My hope is, since I am this invested, the ship the machine back with a new controller as there didn’t seem to be anything with the machine itself. I have. heard that they will deduct a restocking fee if you want a flat out return Or they may deny the return itself. If that is the case I will have to bring it up to Amazon as this is advertised as Amazon pick or choice or whatever they say. My Amazon page was flooded with this machine popping up, now if I didn’t make the purchase I could excuse this. All I know is my pool is going to hell and I have no idea where I stand as of this date. 7-8-2022

Tired Of Polaris Spraying My Windows

After years of having my Polaris spray my windows, patio furniture and anybody that happened to walk around the pool I decided to make the switch to a robotic cleaner. I was tired of buying the Tail Sweep Pro and the ridiculous foam brushes over and over again. Did I mention my wife constantly complaining about the dirty windows and patio door? Anyway - chose to go with the Dolphin Proteus DX4 after a lot of research and talking to my pool maintenance company. What an amazing transformation! First off, no spraying outside of the pool. Secondly, the DX4 scrubs the whole pool bottom, sides, and even comes up and cleans the tile at the water line!! Super clean pool now compared to the job my Polaris did. Of course, it's not perfect but I think the trade off is worth it. It has a hard time picking up small branches that sometimes end up in the pool, but it sucks up everything else like a champ. As a point of reference, we have tons of crepe myrtles around the pool so we have more leaves than normal - zero problems with them. The only recommendation I have is to buy the caddy for it. Since you have to manually drop it in the pool and take it out when it is finished - the caddy makes it very convenient. One added note - my wife loves me again - no more window cleaning!! Now if they could only invent a little mini one of these to run around in my hot tub.....

I’ve been using the product about 2 weeks now and while the robot cleans my entire small pool, it takes at least two cycles to be thoroughly clean. The Proteus on runs for two hours per cycle with no way to change cycle duration. While I only need to push the button again, if I’m not home it could interfere with plans upon returning. My pool is only 12,000 gallons and roughly 25x14 feet. I believe the issue with not getting all the fine debris is the power of the Proteus displaces the debris near its path which then resettles in a previous cleaned area. Overall, I’m pleased with the purchase but I wish I could adjust the length of a cycle.

While both cleaners vacuum the pool and clean the waterline, the DX4 is superior in it's navigational pattern. The older model that I had would get itself hung up in the frame of the ladder and stay stuck for 10 minutes The swivel feature is a plus as it allows the cord to follow the cleaner without getting kinked up. Last, but not least is the filter basket as opposed to the cloth bags of yesterday. The basket is a huge improvement and is easy to clean. Pool cleaners require a certain amount of effort however the DX4 requires much less time fighting the cloth filter. I expect that this will give me good service.

I like this DX3 a lot. I've used it twice a week for a year now and it does what it's supposed to quite well. I purchased a basket with a fine filter since living in a desert a lot of sand/dust and tiny mesquite tree leaves/buds gets in my pool. In case the manufactuer reads this: there is room for improvement. 1) It is unnecessarily hard to remove the lid when it needs to be removed in case debris gets stuck in the outlet tunnel. 2) There are two small covers on the bottom that fill up with mesquite tree bud spikes. In theory they could be removed using a fingernail, realistically you need a screwdriver to pry them out. 3) The spring that lifts the basket handle is an unnecessary gimmick. Waste of manufacturing and labour cost. 4) the plastic that covers the control buttons started bulging up only after a week of owning this. Probably not enough glue used. No big deal but it takes away from perceived value. These things I noticed makes me wonder if designers actually own and use the things they design.

Short answer, Yes. There are innumerable similar products and reviews aplenty. Deciding which will fit your needs, expectations and budget is a task to be sure. I read several and finally had to pick what I thought would fit us best. This is a quality brand with positive reviews. Ours is a medium size pool (23,000 gal) freestyle. Previous cleaner was a Polaris three driven by a booster pump. This was the setup when we first built the pool about 10 years ago. It was good and you could tell when it wasn't run. The Polaris has been rebuilt more than once and the booster pump finally gave out. This prompted the search for something new. This DOLPHIN DX3 is doing an amazing job. The floor and walls are the best they've been and the water stays clearer. It operates better than I expected and has raised the bar as far as I am concerned. Especially at this price point, I can recommend.

I have used the unit three times. It is easy to set up, cleans well on the bottom and up the sides of the pool. It climbs up the bottom step but has difficulty getting up the next step. It's cleaning pattern is random so it needs to be guided to areas that it has missed. Very easy to clean the filter basket. The unit comes up short in my opinion, because it does not have a swivel system at the point where the power cable attaches to the robot. Still, very happy with the purchase.

I have owned a 16' x 32' inground pool for 19 years, and this is my 2nd summer using this pool cleaner. I live in western New York, so I have to deal with leaves, seeds, cotton from cottonwood trees, etc. I CANNOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE THIS CLEANER MAKES!! I have not manually cleaned my pool since I bought this. It keeps my pool ridiculously clean, and the only "help" I give to pool cleaning is to brush my steps occasionally, and maintain the chlorine and pH. My pool was so clean when I closed my pool last year, my pool had NO GREEN in it when I opened it this year. That is the first time that has ever happened! I should have bought this years ago, and I STRONGLY recommend it. I do run the cleaner daily and rinse out the filter screens in it every 2 or 3 days.

Unplugged, waited 5 minutes, then plugged everything back in still nothing happened. Called the seller and they said to submit a request through Amazon since I Purchased it through there. Submitted a request through amazon and they said to contact the manufacturer. Contacted the manufacturer and was informed that components shifted during shipping. Restrained myself from asking why they didn't put a couple of pieces of styrofoam in place or at least a sheet of paper explaining the fix. Manufacturer had me remove four screws (Two from the top, then two from the mount revealed after removing the top and the cowling under it) then "Shift around the motor" followed by re-installing the screws. This resolved the issue. Product appears to work well, though feature wise it is incredibly lacking. Lacking Features: Scheduling function is worse than rudimentary What the heck is the reasoning behind the "You have to set it up again every week?" function No real error handling Instructions are non-sensical (Can't plug it into an extension cord?) Can't stop it from wrapping the cable around pool features. ---September 28,2022 Update--- The Issue does not only occur during shipping. When you put it back into the pool, you need to ease it in, dropping it into the water from just a couple of inches up is sufficient to displace the components that shifted when mine was shipped.

Cheap product and badly designed

Reader - Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2022

We bought the Dolphin Proteus DX3 when our Dolphin Sigma died for the second time, 26 months after purchase, as a backup for the Sigma, because while the Sigma is still under warranty, many parts are backordered and the warranty requires us to ship the product back to the manufacturer. Which is another issue entirely. The Proteus costs less than half of what the Sigma does (And did. It's $500 more now than when we bought it!), so we knew it would be a lesser machine, but hoped it would get us through until the Sigma (a great machine, breakdowns not withstanding) is back in functional order. I put it in the pool a couple of hours ago, and it did clean the pool, including vacuuming out accumulated leaves. But with half the scrubbers and fewer motors, it doesn't clean as well or as efficiently as the Sigma. Which was to be expected. The real problem is that when I pulled the Proteus out to clean the large debris basket, I discovered that there is NO WAY to keep the basket closed as it's pulled from the machine. It opens EVERY TIME, dumping the debris right back into the Proteus. Much of it fell back into the pool I'd just cleaned. As I carried the basket to and from the grass where I rinsed it out, it refused to stay closed. That latch is TRASH. Completely ineffective. What is the point of a debris basket that just dumps the debris out the moment it's removed from the vacuum? I had to take the entire machine across the yard and hold it upside down to rinse it out, because the design prevents you from rinsing the erroneously dumbed debris from the machine itself when it's upright, or even on its side. Yes, this machine was "only" $700. But with this design flaw, it's worth less than nothing. Don't waste your time or money. The two stars I gave it are because it does actually clean the pool. If slowly, inefficiently, and less well than the better Dolphin models. Not that that matters, if it's going to dump leaves and dirt right back into the pool.

Poor suction, cleans minimally . Gets stuck on bottom circulation inlet over and over. Have to grab it and pull off to go again. Running it over and over again gets good results. However, timer is only an hour or so and no readout when cycle is finished. You just need to check on it often for getting stuck or timing out and manually push the start button again. And, again. And again! My old Polaris 9450 worked much better and was easier to clean filter too. It's problem was it only lasted for 4-5 years, then died. For almost a grand, I expect better from BOTH units. Proteus DX4 Poor Pool Coverage

Bryan C. - Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2022

I purchased the Proteus DX4 robotic vacuum for one week ago. I have probably ran it ten times. Today I observed the performance for the entire 2 hours. The pool is 30’ X 18’ and kidney shaped. The circumference of the pool is 85’. I ran the DX4 for the default 2 hours. The pools pump is a variable speed and was running at about 1/3 maximum speed. I started the cleaning at the remote end of the pool in the shallow area. I have started the DX4 in different areas and get similar results. The DX4 climbed the wall 15 times in 6 areas which covered 25 feet or 30% of the pool circumference for water edge scrubbing. This seems disappointing, especially only scrubbing in six areas, 30% of the pool. The DX4 spent over 1/6th of the time around the main drain cover. It would back up and continue running over the drain cover. The main drain is shut off and not used in this pool. The main drain cover meets the new standards to prevent personal injury when the suction is turned on. The DX4 seems to prefer using the center of the length of the pool and only branching right or left in the six areas identified for water edge cleaning. Numerous times while climbing from the deep end (about 6’ deep) it would seemingly stall and abort the climb to the shallow end. I also observed it frequently moving forward and backward repeatedly only covering about a foot in either direction. Attached is a picture showing the six areas where water edge scrubbing was observed. The areas where there are no black buckets indicates there were no attempts for water edge cleaning or cleaning the pool floor. From my perspective the coverage for my pool was poor. I purchased the DX4 for the Water Edge Scrubbing and the Swivel in the power cord. Neither feature met my expectations. I expected the DX4 to cover the entire pool in the 2 hour cycle. I contacted Maytronics about my concerns last week, and the rep suggested I clean the impeller. The pool is screened and was manually cleaned before using the DX4, so I was confident there were no obstructions and the DX4 was clean after disassembling and inspection. I have also completely unplugged the unit, thinking the unit might reset, but the coverage characteristics are similar on the next run. Maytronics is willing to run diagnostics since the DX4 is within warranty period, only one week old, but I have to pay for shipping which seems ridicules. I contacted Maytronics support and their recommendations were (1) turn off the pool pump during the 2 hour cleaning period (2) The also felt the issue with continuous cleaning of the main drain was also tied to the pool pump (note the drain has a plug in it) (3) Be prepared to manually clean areas of the pool (4) DX4 will not clean steps because the water is too shallow (it has cleaned this area on a subsequent test run) I also ex[plained that I also tested a Maytronics Active Solo, which did not exhibit any of these issues and that it did an excellent job of cleaning the pool. I am a retired engineer. I have no experience in robotics.

A few things to consider. We live in an area of north Texas where it rains unexpectedly a LOT, even when the forecast says 0% chance of rain. So we can not leave a $900 electrical machine controller sitting out in the open for fear it will get wet and be ruined. This machine must be plugged into an electrical power source, so if your pool is more than 3 feet away from the house, you will have to use an extension cord, which we have to unroll 40 feet and and then roll back up after each use. The vacuum itself might only weigh 14 pounds, but when you are lifting it from the water full of leaves and water, it is much, much heavier. It is more than my strong 11 year old can handle, and almost more then I can handle; I'm 67 and disabled. The power cable to the machine must be painstakingly unrolled and fed into the pool after the vac is submerged, or it will only travel as far as the tangled cord allows. We have to tie the power supply onto the fence, as the vac almost pulled the electronic controller into the pool. The basket lid sticks and won't open half the time. Our hose for cleaning the basket is clear across the yard which I then have to navigate with my walker. With the backorder unavailability of the caddy for the setup, it's quite a chore to carry the machine power supply cable and extension cord to a rain-proof area. If I leave the controller sitting in a sunny area, it overheats during a 2-hour cycle. We have a lot of trees, and fall is a challenge to keep the leaves out of the pool. I ran it for three 2-hour cycles yesterday, and although the vac picked up some, there were still lots of leaves in the pool. Now the pool is going green. I'm not too sure this was the best bet for our needs.

My old dolphin lasted 12 summers. This one is much lighter weight and easier to lift out of the pool and the debris basket vs the bag is gold star worthy. So much easier to clean. Literally takes seconds to rinse and return to the vacuum. Time will tell if the power source and vacuum last like the last one did!

We have a 18k gallon pool with a baja shelf and a spa. I worried that this model would not do all that the $2k+ models would do, but after having it for 5 weeks, I am very happy with it. Our pool sits under a very large gumbo limbo tree that sheds its entire canopy twice a year. This was causing me to vacuum the pool 2 or 3 times a week, which was extremely time consuming. That prompted me to look into an automated robot. If I could do anything differently, it would be to order the higher model with the app-based remote control, but in all honesty, this one works just fine. The capacity is more than we need, and cleaning particulate is a little bit of a chore, but I am just whining. I recommend this product wholeheartedly.

Does a great job on debris

Mike Mitchell - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 18, 2021

This is a replacement for a Dolphin Deluxe 4. The two biggest differences between this model and our previous model is the debris basket and the brushes. Our previous model had a bag. What a pain to clean. It’s like night and day difference. You could. Punt on 15 minutes with a hose on the previous model in addition to turning the unit over, messing with clips, stretching the bag to fit on the frame, etc. it was a pain. With this one you open the top, grab the handle, pull out the basket, open the bottom and spray it out. It seems a little flimsy, but it is super easy and takes maybe 5 minutes tops. Now, the ok’d bag caught all the fine dirt. This model catches none of it. So, it will stay in the poll or go into the filters. That’s a downside of having it “easy”. The other difference is that both roller/brushes on the old unit turned at the same rate at the track. On this unit, one of the brushes rotates faster, which gives it a bit of “scrubbing” capability. While the old unit would move forward and backward to change direction slightly, this unit uses side jets of water to make 90° turns. It pretty impressive to watch. I read some previous comments about this unit not climbing walls... So for it has no shortcomings in climbing the 9 ft walls of our pool and does a better job of scrubbing the waterline as the old unit.

The media could not be loaded. So I'm in florida and my pool is 15x24 ft and about 9.5 ft to 3.5 deep. I did not clean my pool for about 6months. Local pool cleaners charge me 200 dollars for chlorine and weekly cleaning per month. My pool was extremely dirty with leaves at the bottom. Water was clear cause I added chlorine as per schedule. This robot handle I would say maybe 5 to 7 good shovel scoops of leaves out of my pool. I received it today and ran it immediately. 8 hours later and stopping it to clean the filter 5 times I will honestly say it's clean. I bout the dx3 model. It was stuck once at the end of the nite mind you is 1223 am but I released the filter and sent it back out there. I bout the 3 year protection plan and cost me 700 total. If it last 4 months I feel I got my money worth. Everyone is complaining it gets stuck sometimes but in reality it's saving me money and I have company over and BBQ and prefer a pool leaf and debris free. It's a good deal glad I crossed over from the pool guy. With the protection plan if it has issues I will update on that process but so far so good and I encourage other pool owners to try to manage it as well. Pro tip: if your pool as algae at the bottom this robot will try its best but I had over 5 months of growth. It tried but left streaks. I scrubbed it myself and when it settled it did pick up all the residuals. I will update if anything changes.

It was only 2 hours after receiving it that I dropped it in the pool and hit the start button as advised and the robot went to work cleaning the bottom and sidewalls as advertised. It doesn't have the side jets that the more expensive models do but still does a really good job at getting debris and windblown trash out of the pool. Only had it for a couple of weeks now but am very satisfied so far. My wife used to spend a couple of hours cleaning the pool with the pool vac setup with my help. Now "Bullseye" takes care of it in the same amount of time with very little input from us. Would definitely buy again.

The pool has never looked so clean after it completes it's cycle. During the first run, it got stuck on one of the drains, but after I assisted it, it was fine. It has not gotten stuck again since that day. The customer service has been great too. The unit was shipped without the 2nd set of filters. I reached out and let them know. 5 days later, I had the filters. I'll update if anything changes.

We had debated getting one of these for a long time and finally went for it. It was worth every penny. We have used it for one full pool season and it has made a huge difference. We just drop it in once per day and it vacuums the whole pool, climbs the walls and scrubs the water line. We have had to put a fraction of the shock we normally do in because the pool is so free of debris that little algae grows. We can actually see the bottom of the pool all the time now. It is so nice not to haul out the hose and vacuum and mess with backwashing. The basket on this model is quite large so we just quick hose it out every other time we run the robot. The only two things are that it does get caught on the steps sometimes and we have to move it and start the program over. The other thing is that the first time we used it when we opened the pool it could not keep up with the amount of dirt in the pool. We had to manually vacuum it upon opening and then switch to the robot after that. Perfect for keeping up with every day maintenance. Can’t say enough good things about this model. I hope it lasts quite a few years. We have a 40x60 in-ground concrete pool.

The media could not be loaded. The Proteus DX4 is the first robotic pool cleaner I have purchased, and - generally speaking - I am satisfied with the job it does of vacuuming my pool. I cannot speak yet for how much this bot will save me from cleaning the big pool filter, but it does save time on scrubbing. I’ve had the DX4 for almost four months now and there is one particular issue that makes me rate this robot a 3, and not a 4 or 5. The one issue is that the cleaner often gets stuck. My pool does not have a complicated shape at all, but it has one ledge that’s about 2 feet from the surface where the robot would climb up, would then try to clean the surrounding walls, and then is unable to back up. It tries to free itself, going back and forth, struggles, and then it turns off. I then have to manually move it and restart the cleaner. I’ve attached a video with this review to illustrate the issue. To me it seems like the software should have been able to handle this sort of situation. This could happen to the top step of stairs for example, so I'd think it's a common situation. I'd be interested to see if there is a firmware update of sorts I could apply to the unit to get rid of this issue. It is quite annoying, especially because the unit just turns off. If it tried to free itself a bit longer, it could do it.

Pop this little guy in and then collect in less than 3 hours and retrieve the basket, as shown, and low, it collects everything, even, as in this case, a basket full of acorns!! This thing has some great suction. It climbs up the walls, scubbing as it goes. Pretty clever. What i like best? Not having to manually fill the hose and plugging it into the side of the pool to vacuum the old way - I hated that! This DX does all of that without the hassles. Now it won't clean the spa...it's too big for that. It also won't climb up the wall of the spa where it is too curved, it isn't designed for that either. However, it does eall else, and I'm thrilled with it. I heartily recommend. PS - I thought about getting the more expensive Dolphin and wondered if I made the right choice....I did, no need to pay the extra money unless your pool is larger, then you might need the more expensive model.

I have not had this cleaner but a month, come back in 8 months and I can give a better review. The cleaner works great it climbs my walls just like the advertisement says it would. I have one issue with the cleaner, getting it out of the pool. It does have a recessed area in it for picking up, but you have to reach down in the water to get it out. It would be great if there was a way for it to float to the top when cycle is complete like some others.

Super efficient, quiet, and easy to operate.

Amazon Customer - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 4, 2021

I should have purchased this years ago. We've been using a Polaris sweep for the past 5 years. I rebuilt it one, replaced the (I think it's called) the backflow valve on the hose and I even replaced the large and EXPENSIVE pump. These kinds of things to make the Polaris clean the pool really start to add up. With all that the little guy kept getting stuck in the corner and would creep along at a snail's pace, and the pool was never perfect. I finally shut it down two weeks ago and, after some research, decided on this unit. So, after 2 weeks our pool was full of leaves and small debris. Then this unit finally arrived, and after a short read of the instructions, I plugged it in and over the edge and into the water it went. The basket, which is super easy to clean (and large) filled in about 30 minutes. I emptied it 3 times... So much easier than the old bag to empty. This morning my pool couldn't be cleaner. It vacuums the bottom, climbs and cleans the walls and NEVER gets stuck in a corner. And I don't have to listen to the pump. When this operates, you literally can't hear anything. It's absolutely silent. So this spring we'll swim without dodging the Polaris and it's hose. Great purchase so far.

Does what a robot is supposed to do!

FLDad - Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2020

Cleaning capability quite good for most of the pool. Struggles a little bit near odd-shaped areas - steps, swim out, raised drains...hence four stars - but otherwise very effective. Cycle takes about two hours, and you literally toss him in, straighten out and hook up the cable, plug in the power supply, hit the button...and walk away. There is no end of cycle indication that I've noted, but none is really necessary: after a couple of hours, you get used to looking out occasionally to see if he's stopped. Cleanup is a snap: pop the lid, pull out the filter basket and hose it out, rinsing off the unit at the same time. It's become part of the weekly pool regimen, along with cleaning the pool filter, so garden hose is already out. Let the robot dry in the sun for a couple of hours, then he's back on the shelf until the next weekend. Cleaning without a hiccup for a couple of months; let us see what a full season of use brings. So far...recommended

We lost our booster pump because of the freeze, no impeller to be found anywhere. We were tired of waiting and, our pool was suffering. We decided to buy a robotic cleaner to replace the booster pump and, the Polaris 280 cleaner. This eliminated both components, reducing cost and repairs. Now we only worry about the cleaner itself, and not a booster pump. We also are saving energy with removing the 3/4 HP booster pump that ran 2 to 3 hr. a day. We bought the DOLPHIN Proteus DX3 Automatic Robotic Pool Cleaner, bought it Sunday and it arrived Monday. It was easy to set up and run, just dropped it into the pool and withing hrs. it was clean. It could climb the walls and the steps with no problems. Once it was done, it was easy to clean and stored in our storage box. The only concern is the control box. It is water resistant but not waterproof. We store the control box in our sunroom, next to the pool, to keep it dry. I will build a watertight box for it so if it does rain while we are cleaning the pool, it will stay dry. In all, we are very happy with this product.

READ THE BAD REVIEWS: It works great, but doesn't last long!

Juan V - Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2022

I purchased my Dolphin Proteus DX4 in March. It does a great job of cleaning the pool, though the "kink-free" cable doesn't fully work as intended. It will still kink up. I was happy with it, while it lasted. By August, it had died. It would start up, then shut off almost immediately. I did research and checked the impeller. It had some hair in it, but not much. With that clean, it was still dead. I followed all of the troubleshooting tips provided by Maytronics and anything else I could find online. Nothing worked. I was outside my return window for Amazon, so contacting Maytronics was my only choice. Their customer service is nice enough, though the wait can be long. I received an RMA with a shipping label to send my robot to their service center. That was mid-late August. Now, almost a month after they received it, the only info I can get is that they're waiting for parts. I won't be able to get any other information until they ship it back. Who knows how long that will be. For the price of this unit, you would expect years of trouble-free service, not 5 months. Very disappointed after spending so much on it. I can't see myself buying another Dolphin when they're failure rate is high enough that the repair wait time is this long.

GH0$T-8198 - Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2020

Dolphin is known for excellent pool cleaning robots, and this model, the Proteus DX4, is no exception. It is very simple to set up and use right out of the box. I had mine working within minutes of receiving the delivery. It's programmable for multiple cleanings a week up to one full two-hour cycle a day. The large, top-load filter basket is a breeze to empty and wash out. The DX4's one big detractor here is it does not have a full basket indicator to let you know when you should empty it. The DX4 has two scrubbing brushes and a powerful enough vacuum to get just about everything off the pool floor including dirt, twigs, and leaves. It also does a great job climbing the walls and cleaning the waterline without the expensive foam climbing rings found on some older models. The DX4 carries an $850 price tag which gets you everything except smart device connectivity and the aforementioned full filter basket indicator making it a great value if you don't want to pay extra for those features.

But that is where the good news ends. The unit would work its way around the deep end but that was it. Even though I would start the unit in the 3' shallow end it immediately would find its way to the 6' end of the pool and stay there popping wheelies and therefore not really picking up too much. I only wish I ordered it years ago, it would have saved me countless hours of pain. I've had multiple back surgeries and this gave me a new appreciation for my pool. Now I just drop it in, and 2 hours later its done. It only took 3-4 sessions to clean up an dark green 30,000 gallon pool to almost perfectly clear, w/o using a bunch of chlorine. Now once a week or so is all I need to keep it sparkling clear. I never was able to get it this clear, this fast using elbow grease. Now I can relax instead of stress. Followed all instructions carefully, placed robot in pool, connect power and turn on power. Robot led blinks a couple of times, then starts to move. then stops, then move some more, then stops again. No lights, no movement. Power supply is still on, but robot is dead in the water. The whole process wasn't even a minute long. Turning it off and on while it's still in the water would repeat the same process. led blinks a couple of times, then starts to move, then stops, then move some more, then stops again. Search online to see if I've done anything wrong. Most comment said to check if impeller is stuck. Checked it, was totally clean, can move the impeller fan with finger. Decided to contact Seller (In the Swim Pool Supplies) on 4/5/21. Didn't get a response till 4/7/21. Their response was because I had the item for over 30 days, they ask me to contact the manufacturer directly. If the manufacturer makes a diagnosis that the item is defective, they can go ahead and assist you further with the warranty claim....WTF. It's not even 30 days. If I can select 0 stars, I would. Product deserves 0 stars for it to be defective. Seller deserves 0 stars to pass the buck. They would charge a 50% restocking fee as stated on their profile. Service deserves 0 stars for not even taking care of their customers. Should had believe all the other 1 stars review. If you want to get a pool robot, go to your local shop, and make sure they will take care of you in person. They at least would fix your robot free of charge when it's under warranty. Unlike internet order where if the manufacture would finally respond back to me (I contacted them waiting for the diagnosis) They would most likely need me to ship the unit to them (out of pocket) and wait for who knows how long before I get to see it again. I'm contacting some local shops around the area to see if anyone would willing service it under warranty, and if not, how much it would cost to fix my brand new robot. Might as well spend a little more than throw $850 out of the window.

The only drawback is that it has a smallish leaf bin. The instructions recommend to clean everyday, which we usually do. It's a much easier process since its lighter, more streamlined and easier to take out of the pool. Doesn't leak leaf bits back into the pool as it comes out of the water. To clean just lift open the top door, grab the bin handle and lift out. What an improvement over the fabric one that was a pain to take out from the bottom. We'll probably wish we got a bigger model during the few weeks of fall, but expecting to be happy for 11 months out of the year with this one.

The cord is long enough to reach the entire pool. It is very easy for me to use. I have no problem placing it in or taking it out of the water. It cleans the pool beautifully. Sometimes I will run it for two cycles, if we have had a storm or heavy wind that has deposited debris in the pool. The filter is easily cleaned with a hose. I did not realize that one can purchase a caddy for it. I bought a very large bin, with wheels, and I keep it in that.. In sum, I highly recommend this product. The pool stays cleaner that it has ever been, and I have not used the pole vacuum at all this summer. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for "easy to clean" only because my hose is not in the pool area. It should really be 5 stars.

It isn’t able to do the steps because of the size but that is not a problem. The pool is spotless. It is so easy to use and you really don’t have to do anything but sit back and watch. When you take it out of the water you hose down the filter basket and you are done. Open the top, lift it out, spray it off, and put back in. Couldn’t be easier. When you lift it out of the water it floats to the top, grab the handle, let the water drain out in 30 seconds, and lift it on out. It is not heavy at at all. My pool is 11’X29’ fiberglass.

Big disappointment

Product did not live up to description. I have a15x30 oval pool with 6 foot deep end. Vacuum would clean about 3/4 of total floor area and 1/4 of walls. Movement seemed totally random and haphazard, not mapped as described. Read reviews carefully as Amazon has lumped reviews of the dx3 and dx4 together artificially raising the star rating of the dx3. The 2 stars are for Amazon's return policy and In The Swim's full refund on product return, not the dx3 which I would give a 0.

Delivered 3/22/21. Worked great @ 1-2 times per week in a 35k inground vinyl-lined pool until 8/17/21. Now, comes on for about 15 seconds & dies. Working with cust service. Will update review when they take care of issue. Update: Cust serv got back to me & troubleshot problem. 10 minutes later, its working great again. I had to loosen the motor (4 screws) shake it & reinstall it. Presto!

A good value

Dave R - Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021

I have used this product for about 2 months. My pool was quite dirty when I first started using the Dolphin. It cleans the pool quite thoroughly, so I had to clean the unit often. It has also been very dusty and windy where I live. I run the unit every day. It runs for two hours at a time and I clean the unit about every two days now that the unit has caught up with the filth that was in my pool. It is much quicker and easier to clean than my old Tiger Shark. My pool’s capacity is 12500 gallons. Overall, I am quite satisfied. This unit does not leave any areas undone.

This is an electric pool vac!

BigGrammie - Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021

I thought this was a rechargeable vacuum. It is electric and cannot operate when anyone is in the pool. The cord is barely long enough to cover my 16x32 in ground pool; a longer cord is available for $275. It does pick up debris, including sand, pretty well. However, I find it cumbersome to get out of my pool after each use. Next time I’ll spend the extra and get a rechargeable model.

Question & Answers

Question
Why won't this cleaner climb the walls?
Answer

The above ground robotic pool cleaners are designed specifically for cleaning the FLOORS ONLY.

Question
What is the typical life span of a Dolphin robot?
Answer

The Dolphin is designed to last many seasons. However, the lifespan differs from Dolphin to Dolphin. Many different factors play a role, such as amount of use, pool chemistry, and pool surface.

Question
What DIY repairs can I complete on my Dolphin?
Answer

DIY repairs should be completed by an authorized technician. Please contact your local retailer for service, Maytronics directly at 1-888-365-7446 or the support page of our website.

Question
What are the voltage requirements for the Dolphin power supply?
Answer

The Dolphin requires a standard 120v outlet for power.

Question
Is the dolphin proteus dx3 a good choice for a fiberglas in-ground pool? also will it get fine sand off bottom of pool?
Answer

Yes, my pool is fiberglass & it climbs up the side

Question
can the dolphin clean excessive dog hair or must you buy a special type of filter for that? Our dog is a Rottweiler who thinks he’s a Labrador
Answer

Yes, the Dolphin will work on pet hair with the normal filters. I have two long-haired dogs (that don't get in the pool) whose fur blows into the pool and will clog the impeller motor. Easy to clear - just remove three screws. With a shorter-haired dog, you might not need to do this as often as I do (every other run!).

Question
can dolphins be used in vinyl inground pool
Answer

Yes, the Dolphin Proteus DX3 is ideal for vinyl in-ground swimming pools up to 33'.

Question
Can you bypass or skip the waterline cleaning? our old polaris machine allowed you to select areas (i.e.floor, walls & floor or waterline, floor/walls
Answer

I don’t think so. With the control unit, you turn on the power and you can select how often you want it to clean. Once a week, twice a week or more. I take it out after it cleans the pool. And I’ve found that I need to turn off the pump when I have the Dolphin going. Because it goes over the skimmer opening and blocks the intake. So I just turn it off til it’s done.

Question
Can it work 220 Voltage
Answer

No - 110VAC

Question
Looks like I need a new controller for my dolphin are the connections the same for all dolphin units ??
Answer

Your best bet is to ask Dolphin.

Answer

it comes with what is installed.

Question

Answer

Question

Answer

I sent this one back. I purchased the Dolphin Matronics instead.

Question
The handle on my unit jammed and snapped off. how do i replace it?
Answer

I would call customer service at Amazon

Question
Does it let you know when the filter is full?
Answer

Not that I know of. Ijust clean it when it's finished it's cycle. Don't let the debris it picks dry out. Once I hose out the basket, I spray it with Simple Green cleaner and let it soak for about 5 or 10 Min. to loosen any embedded Algae, then rinse it out and stow it away.

Question
Will the fine filter capture pollen that has settled on the bottom of the pool? It’s like a darkish residue and resembles dirt.
Answer

Yes. Mine has done a great job of picking up dirt, sand, pollen, and other fine materials that settle on the pool floor. My pool was quite dirty, as it went a couple of months during the winter without any vaccuming because my traditional 3 wheel booster powered vaccum died. It took 5 or 6 cycles for the new Dolphin to finally pickup all of the filth that had settled down there over those couple of months, but ultimately it has done a great job at picking up the finer stuff. We now just run it once every 2 or 3 days and the pool floor is nearly spotless!

Question
Is this robot bivolt?
Answer

I don’t understand bivolt

Question
Has a weekly schedule assume its OK to leave in pool until filter needs to be cleaned?
Answer

Yes it is safe to leave in the pool as long as the temperature doesn’t get too cold. The specifications for temperature are in the instructions.

Answer

The Dolphin can be operated when a pool is covered with a floating thermal blanket.

Question

Answer

I bought it thru amazon

Question
Does the Proteus DX5i come with the caddie/cart?
Answer

No the cart is separate.

Question
I'm comparing several brands before pulling the trigger. How many gallons per hour does this filter?
Answer

My pool is 20x40 and I think the unit is on small side for a pool this size. I have to run it twice - it’s doesn’t pick up everything and seems to miss the far side edges consistently. Also my pool just started leaking - I hope it didn’t rip my liner but my pool guy says this can happen. :(

Question
I have a DX4, canI hang it up by the handle or lay it flat upsidedown?
Answer

We place ours on a shelf on the plant shelf when not in use

Question
Does this float on its own after it’s done it’s 3 hour courses. also if i manually turn it off before it’s course will it float ordo i pull cord light
Answer

Mine runs for two hours not three. And yes you have to manually pull it out of the pool. The instructions say not to pull on the blue cord but to pull up close to bulb. Drain the water out by turning it upside down outside for a short period of time and then put it back out of the sun in a safe place. It does not float to the top of the water when finished cleaning. I pull mine out just before the two hours are up or when I see it in the shallow part of the pool. It needs to be cleaned after every vacuum

Question
Does does it pick up the fine particles like dead algae after shocking?
Answer

Yes it does…so much cleaner than using the hose…my pool is the cleanest ever since I started using it. Also it goes up the sides of mine to the water line and does a swim ledge most of the time. I’m very happy watching it work vs having to use the pole and hose to do it myself. Gets all the fine sand we have here.

Question
Just received a dx5i may 31st, 2022. thought it would come with both fine and extra fine pleated filter, is there extra fine for this model? part#?

Answer

It appears to clean it up as there is none left after the machine passes over it and no more appears until a few days later.

Question
does the DX4 come with a caddy?
Answer

Mine did not come with a storage cart or caddy. I am still using my old one from my now defunct Dolphin 4 Pro and the new power supply locks into the same space just as the old one did.

Question
que corriente ocupa/ 110v ó 220v?
Answer

110v

Question
whats is better the dx5i or the natilus cc plus with wifi?
Answer

Can’t say for certain. The nautilus price says it is. But for me, I don’t need a WiFi feature. Sure the convenience is nice but not a necessity for me. Nor is the added hassle of connectivity. You’re gonna have to empty out the filter pretty often anyways. So my rationale is empty it, drop it back in & hit the power button. My proteus does the job just fine.

Question
does it pick up sand?
Answer

As long as you use the secondary (corrugated) filters.

Question
What are the differences between the nautilus cc and the dolphin proteus dx3?
Answer

The Nautilus cc has 2 scrubbing brushes and a longer cord than the DX3. Check the Nautilus DX4 too which also has 2 scrubbing brushes. I bought the Nautilus DX4 after comparing the DX3 and the CC. The DX4 comes with 2 sets of filters for the cleaning basket. With the DX3, you have to buy the finer filter separately.

Question
What's the difference from this and the nautilus?
Answer

I've only had the Dolphin. This is my first pool. The Dolphin works great for us.

Question
Why unit has stopped working what is the customer support phone number, only been using 6 weeks
Answer

I don’t the answer to that. Ask Amazon in a chat.

Question
Can this be used for above ground pools to pick up dirt
Answer

I believe it is inground pools only should say so in the description

Question
pool is 20/40 kindney shaped 10 ft deep. willdolphin nautilus work on my pool?
Answer

I think it should be fine. My pool is free form somewhat kidney shaped and it gets everything clean plus has plenty of reach for the deep end. Ours is approximately 9 foot deep and it is 20 x 42. The other plus is the seller (In The Swim) is actually a division of Leslie's Pools. I contacted the manufacturer before purchasing from a 3rd party seller and was comforted to know if I had any warranty work they would be able to handle it easily.

Question
What does waterline cleaning mean? Does it clean the floating dirt and I won't need to use a net to cleaning the surface?
Answer

The cleaner will go up the wall and stay at the surface while it's brush roll turns at the waterline cleaning the wall at the waterline.

Question
Do we need to purchase a stand for this cleaner to store it between cleanings?
Answer

Nope. I’ve only had it a few weeks and I just leave it in the pool which the company says is fine to do unless you are adding chemicals. When I do pull it out, it just sits on the deck and there are no issues in doing that. I never leave it in the sun. Now, there must be some other kind of scrubbing rollers on other models because manual said they would deform if left out to dry. There is no way mine would do that so I think the manual covers different models. Mine is the 5 model. Hopefully this helps but if you have rollers that are anything other than gray rubber with flappers, you may need to inquire further. I love mine.

Question

Answer

It has but very seldom.

Question
What is difference between dx3 and dx4? i have a 33ft pool (8ft at the deep end) would dx3 work? also i don’t see these models on maytronics website?
Answer

Our new one isn’t blue tooth the next size up is. You will not be unhappy with this brand we love maytronics model.

Question
I have a vaccum attachment in the deep end which i cannot get out of my pool because i cannot see where it is and my pool is dirty. Will this go aroun
Answer

I'm not sure what attachment your talking about but if the attachment is larger than the opening of the pool cleaner that all the leaves and dirt has to go through to enter the waste basket the attachment can't be vacuumed up. This pool cleaner will just push that attachment around the pool or pass over it.

Question
How much water does this need to work?

Question
Sales rep or Manf. Can it be left in pool 24x7? Will floor return pump drains open be a problem if it rolls over them? drains
Answer

Yes we leave ours in 24/7 except when dogs swim. Once in a great while (like 3x over almost 6 months), it shut off but we’re simple pressed the one button and it remembered the schedule. We have two floor drains with grates over them and it smoothly travels over them without a problem. The one issue we’ve ever had is it got caught up in the two built in stools we have.

Question

Question
I see responses that say the DX4 comes with fine (mesh) and ultra fine (pleated) filters and others that say it only comes with fine. Which is it?
Answer

I'm no expert but I would say super fine. We had a lot of sand let over from construction, blow into our pool and the Dolphin was able to vacumm it up and it was in the filter. If it wasn't super fine wouldn't it have fell thru and back into the pool?

Question
Will the DX3 work on a 25' round in ground pool?
Answer

Do you mean the diameter of your round pool is 25ft? If yes, then DX3 should work fine. I believe it has 32 or 33' chord. it works on my 16 X 32ft pool. I usually put the contoller unit close to the middle of the length of the pool, so it has plenty of room/slack for the chord.

Question
Got this today and attempted to use it. After running for 3 hours I noticed there was still a lot of debris in the pool.very little suction. Any sug?
Answer

I have the same problem. I ended up running it three times and it still did not pick up everything, although it did a pretty good job. I bought mine last year and posted that I wish I had paid the extra for a programmable model that could be set to learn your pool or be programmed to run a specific pattern.

Question
I recently purchased one that didn't work right out of the box. got a refund. now i'm hesitant about purchasing another.anyone else have this problem?
Answer

I did not have a problem at all. Did you follow all the instructions on the package slip. Did you use a trip outlet? Did you use an extension cord? All of these is a big no no . You have to follow the directions exclusively. It is slow but it does a great job of cleaning the pool. When you empty the basket you have all kids of derby even if you clean it twice a week.

Question
What is provided with the order for the dolphin dx4 ? in other words, i want to know if it comes with extra filters or other parts or supplies.
Answer

There are no extra parts in the shipment. However the product appears to be sturdy no immediate need for parts. Follow the recommended storage and care. You will be ok. The product is packaged ready to go with minimal to no assembly. The price is cheaper buying online.

Question
I don’t understand size pool 33ft what does that represent is that the length.?

33 feet is how long the cord can reach not counting the recommended slack from the outlet... so a 16' x 32" pool is perfect! She climbs walls like a champ too! I got her and the pool guy never came back!!!!

Question

Question
will it pick up heavier debris like smallish pieces of chewed up pinecones dropped from the trees by squirrels?
Answer

Yes, it will pick up large pieces of debris like twigs, gravel and leaves.

Question
It only run for 2 cycle and then quit
Answer

Mine did the same but ended up being a clogged impeller motor from pet hair. READ the instructions - very easy to clear (I do this once a week, now!).

Question
If you are putting it on a schedule - does that mean the cable is always laying on the deck?
Answer

We do not keep it on a schedule. We monitor the pool and run it twice a week or as needed. The blue cord does not lay on the deck while it is in the pool. It goes into the water with the robot. Once the robot finishes its cycle, we take it out of the water and let it dry off. Then we store it in our pool deck box until next time.

Question
Does the dolphin proteus dx3 map the pool?
Answer

I asked Dolphin this question when I rec'd mine. It only maps when it is started and does it again when it's started again. It has no memory function between start ups.

Question
My robot has been cleaning well, but I noticed it will all of sudden pop up on two wheels on a flat service. Should it be doing that?
Answer

It goes up on two wheels when it comes to a wall or steps. You can contact the company. Ours is cleaning well too.

Question
Is it wifi capable along with the bluetooth?
Answer

Yes

Question
What is the cord for?
Answer

This is an electric powered pool cleaner. It runs on DC power. The umbilical cord provides power from a large AC power adapter that plugs into the wall.

Question
Mine Will not go. Plugged it in, all lights came on. 5 seconds and 4 inches later the unit shuts down. Any ideas?
Answer

Mind did this also. I kept shutting it off and on til it started working.

Question
sirve para 220v
Answer

No solo 110v

Question
This unit does not have "foam climbing rings" that the instructions say are important. Why are they not there?
Answer

Although, I have the DX4 model, the DX3 and the DX4 are very similar. If your Dolphin cleaner didn’t come with the climbing rings I would recommend you contact Maytronics Service Department. They are the manufacture of Dolphin cleaners and their service department is very good.

Question
Cartridges for this model dolphin dx4?
Answer

I'm not aware of any cartridges that are needed for the Dolphin DX4! All you need to do is take out the filter basket after it cleans your pool and wash it out with a hose! Easy pezze!!!

Question
May I use this robot on an above ground pool?
Answer

I don't see what would be a problem. You drop the cleaner in the pool and turn it on. It climbs the walls to the waterline. Whether the pool is in-ground or above-ground should make no difference - so long as you have a power outlet close enough.

Question
We get a lot of leaves and acorns in the pool and concerned that the filter basket won’t be able to accommodate it all ?
Answer

We dont have any trees over our pool but do have palm trees that drop seeds a few months this out of the year, and it’s a lot. also have plants that drop blooms. It has been able to pick all that up. I think it would be good for you. Just have to clean it out a little more often.

Question
Would this work on a 15x15 above ground pool
Answer

I don’t know why mot, but I doubt it will clinb up the walls like an in ground pool because of the right angle from floor to the side vs. a curved transition from floor to side. I would think it will do a good job on the floor. Recommend check with someone who has an above ground pool.

Question
Has anyone attempted to use robot in 12” of water? our pool has a kid area that is only 12” deep. i tried the nautilus cc and it would fill over.
Answer

The Dolphin needs to be completely submerged to work properly. That being said, a 12" depth is probably the very minimum it will effectively work in, as the tops of the side-discharge vents (small blue) are about 9" from the bottom, while the top vent (opposite of the handle end) is right at 12-1/2" from the bottom. These vents are water discharge outlets. This will "most likely" work, but you'll probably get some spray-back from the top vent, and any excess air coming in through the top MAY cause a little loss of suction - not verified, just an educated guess! When it cleans the sides/water line at that end of the pool it will do that by the handle-end facing up, which will keep the discharge vents underwater. Overall, it's a great automatic cleaner and I would definitely give it a try (just double-check the return policy if it doesn't work!).

Question
What kind of filter does it come up? If it does not come with an ultra fine filter basket what is the model that I have to get to supplement?
Answer

It with two complete sets of filters. One is ultra fine and the other fine. They slide right out and you can just hose them off. I can't imagine needing to buy replacements as they are very sturdy. Absolutely love the DOLPHIN Proteus DX3! It has made owning a pool FUN again!

Question
how long is the power cord?
Answer

The power cord is 60 feet long.

Question
Our pool is 36 feet by 16 feet will it work as it should?
Answer

It works really great in my 14X28' pool. approx. 16K gallons. It cleans fast. You can set it for how long you want it to clean & how many days etc. I don't know how to do all that so I just hit the first button. It cleans it pretty much in about a couple of hours. I put in 4-5 times a week. I like it better than previous robotic cleaners. Don't let its size & weight fool you when you take it from the box. I wash shocked at how light weight & small compared to previous robots. But that little dude gets it done fast. I would recommend this item.

Question
Does this require a depth of water?
Answer

Yes, it has to be covered by at least 2". Mine will stop if it's not sucking water through the top. My pool has a ledge step that is shallow and it won't start in it.

Question
Mine will start floating up in the pool like it’s trying to climb the wall but it’s in the middle of the pool. Anyone else have this issue?
Answer

Yes! I recently purchased the Dolphin e30 Explorer, which appears to be the exact same model, but a different color. I am on my second one, and have had the same problem with both. When it is driving forward (toward the end with the larger wheels and handle), that end will suddenly go vertical. Sometimes it will just do a wheelie for a few feet, or from one end of the pool to the other. Sometimes it will float right up to the surface. After several uses, the first one I had completely died. I shipped it back and they sent me a new unit. Same problem. Did you ever find a solution??

Question
Confirm, it comes with both the fine & ultra-fine filter cartridges?
Answer

Yes it does come with the fine & ultra filter cartridges.

Question
does this purchase qualify for the rebate?
Answer

No

Question
2 years old an it doesnt roll anymore help
Answer

I do not know the answer but it is probably clogged up somewhere and needs to be cleaned

Question
can you use it on a gunite pool?
Answer

I am unfamiliar with Gunite, but the tracks on the bottom of the unit are soft silicone, so I would think it would be ok to use on any surface. Local pool stores could answer that question. I bought my pool cleaner from Amazon as the price was better for the same product.

Question
I have a patch on my liner, will this pull it off?
Answer

No it shouldn’t, i have a patch on mine as well. We have had no problems, love the Dolphin!

Question

Answer

Si correcto es la marca mía y siempre la a limpiado muy bien

Question
Is there a way to pull this from the pool without going in the pool? Our current model has a handle that lets us hook something on and pull it up.
Answer

Pull it close to the steps and then pull up on the handle.

Question
Does it clean pool width steps? I also have a sundeck in my pool, would it clean that as well?
Answer

We don't actually have a Dolphin Proteus DX5i. We decided to get the DX 4 because we never used the remote control feature on our Aquabot RC after the novelty wore off. So far the DX4 is doing a good job of cleaning our pool, steps and ledges automatically except for the corners where the steps actually join the pool wall. This area will still have to be brushed for algae if this is a problem in your area. Our sunledges are also two-level decks and the same applies for the intersections. All in all, we are satisfied with this product.

Question
Does it float to surface when done or require pulling it in using the cord?
Answer

It does not float to surface. You need to pull on blue power cord to raise to surface then lift from pool by the bot’s handle.

Question
Will it for vinyl lining pools.
Answer

My pool is vinyl-lined. It works great, It is a joy to have it. Makes me wonder why I waited so long., although they are probably better now than earlier ones.

Question
Im confused here...how is this unit powered and how/where is it attached to the pool? Thanks
Answer

It id powered by electric box with a trip breaker. Needs to be close to the pool location. It is not attached to the pool. You take it out each time and clean the filter and drain the water from the unit . It cleans the pool extremely well.

Question
I see answers from 60 feet down. how long is the cord?
Answer

I haven’t measured it but my pool is 12x29 and I have 15 ft from where I plug it in. and I have more than enough cord…it floats on top of the water…it also goes up and cleans my tanning ledge and water line. I love it!

Question
what's the difference between the dolphin proteus dx3 and nautilus cc, which is better?
Answer

No Idea

Question
Does the cord get tangled?
Answer

i have been using mine for a month and have had no issues with cord tangling

It has not gotten stuck on my bottom drains.

Question

Yes

Question
Will this work, for a above ground pool with a liner?

No it is made for in-ground pools. They make other models for above ground pools. You could look at the Dolphin E10, or the Aiper smart.

Question
How much power does the active 20 use?

barely any

Question
What is the warranty? Both of mine stopped working after 3-6 months and the company was awful.
Answer

24 month limited warranty

Question
My pool has right angle transitions from floor to walls. Will it still climb the walls?
Answer

The best I can tell you is, perhaps. Mine is not 90' angle, but a bit rounded and it works fine. The steps transition more drastically and it still climbs those.

Question
Will this work on a pool floor that isnt flat? Mine has a lot of crevices that sand/dirt settle into, because the ground wasn't flattened before pool
Answer

Our pool is also uneven - footprints, heel prints, so frustrating. I think the DOLPHIN does a pretty good job of cleaning these places. It does sometimes miss some things, but maybe they were floating in the water and settled after that area was cleaned. We've been very pleased with this cleaner. Just need to run it a couple times a week to keep things from getting to bad.

Question
Does the dolpin dx3 pick up leafs and clean black algea
Answer

It picks up leaves but the basket is small so you would have to empty it more often. I usually skim out the big stuff and let it filter the rest and pick up all the little debris. I have never had black algae so not sure about that. It does remove small sediment, sand, seeds, and leave my pool sparkling clean. Much better than my sand filter.

Question
Can you use this in a above ground pool also ?
Answer

We have an inground pool and it works great. my only concern with an above ground pool would be where the “floor” meets the wall… If it’s too sharp of an angle it probably would not be able to climb the walls… Sorry to not be more helpful!

Question
How much does it weigh?
Answer

It weighs 16 pounds but it is so easy to lift and take out. Clean up is so awesome. I had the old model and this is so much better and really does a nice job cleaning .

Question
What is the cord length on this cleaner?
Answer

Power cord or cord on Dolphin

Question
Since most pools are in the sun, why do the instructions say to put the controller in the shade when using? What happens if it’s running in the sun?
Answer

The controller unit gets warm during use. Heat is what makes electronics fail. So I would think that having the control unit in the shade would help keep it somewhat cooler than being directly in the sun. Even if you put an umbrella over it to shade it I think would help some. It's just my thought that by keeping the controller in a shaded area would help it last longer.

Question
Will it pick up small acorns? Thank you.
Answer

Not sure. It wouldn’t fully clean my pool. I’m guessing it would if they are really tiny

Question
Is the controller waterproof? Can it be left outside?
Answer

No. The controller is not waterproof. I would not leave it outside. The instructions point this out as well.

Question
Does this product come complete with controller and power supply
Answer

Yes, comes with power supply that has power supply. No remote controller. Proteus DX4 replaces my Aquabot Turbo 4 that came with a fancy remote. Never liked the remote or the much more expensive T4. Dolphin Proteus 4 does a great job in my pool. So much faster cleaning the Dolphin basket with filter grids than Aquabot bag. And of course the tangle free cord is great. Aquabot cord always tangled.

Question
The dx5i listed here says it has bluetooth but doesn't mention wifi, however the dx5i on the maytronics website shows wifi. which is it?
Answer

I don’t know because that is not the model I bought. I bout a plain Jane model. Mine doesn’t have any of that. I just plug it in, put it in pool & off it goes running around cleaning. I suggest calling the manufacturer. I bought the $650 version & it does a fabulous job without all the bells & whistles.

Question
Does this robot clean the bottom from dead algae and fine dust?
Answer

I have a DX 4 and mine comes with 2 filters, fine, and extra fine. I just ran my Robbie this morning using the x tra fine and it picks up almost all of my algae. Unfortunately mine has quite a few wrinkles so Robbie has gone above and beyond for me. Of course if you have a bunch of algae shock the crap out of it b4 running robot, cause you don’t want to hog up the filters too much so it can’t function at 100%. Hope this helps. BTW I wish I bought my Proteus the first year with my pool, I would have saved a whole bunch of strain and pain on my back/knees…

Question
can the dolphin clean fine dust?
Answer

Yes it does a pretty good job. I have the DX4 model, which came with two different filters for the collection basket. There is a porous screen that is good for larger debris and increases the speed of the vacuum flow. Then there is a thicker corrugated filter that looks like an HVAC filter. It strains fine dust. However, this lowers the vacuum suction a bit and restricts the flow. It still works fine, just takes longer to clean the whole pool. Overall I have to say I am pretty happy with the robot. Works way better than the water driven Polaris I had before.

Question
What if you want to take it out of the pool early before the cleaning cycle ends to clean the filter? Do you power it off first?
Answer

Yes always. Power it down before removing it from the pool.

Question
Just recieved it**mine will not go. plugged it in, all lights came on. 5 seconds and 4 inches later the unit shuts down. any ideas?
Answer

Did you push the buttons on the unit console on the table?

Question
which is best for vinyl in ground pools?
Answer

The Dolphin DX4 works well on my 20x40 in ground vinyl pool.

Question
Pool is 15x32x6, whic model is recommended?
Answer

The DX3 should work fine! Our pool is 18X38X5 (with a sloping down to a 7 foot deep end and we got the DX4 and quite frankly there is a LOT of cord left over and we could have used the DX3. ONE WORD OF ADVICE, do indeed lay the cord out in the sun to get the bend / memory out of it so you don't get tangles! WE LOVE OUR UNIT and it works AMAZINGLY!

Question
Does this product come with the connector? all that the picture shows? does not specify if everything it shows is included.
Answer

I'm not sure what you mean by a connector, but it did come as shown....vacuum cleaner, power cord from vacuum to control box, control box, and power cord from control box to outlet. It does not come with a storage cart.

Question
who repairs this if something goes wrong during the warranty period? local stores will not repair if not purchased through them.?
Answer

Question
Does it really brush pool walls? mostly the dolphins brushes spin at the same rpm and work like wheels, not real brushes. they must have different rpm
Answer

Yes. The Dolphin does climb the walls of the pool. I was really surprised to see it happen but it did clean the walls as well as the floor. Amazing!

Question
Will the dolphin-proteus dx3 pool cleaner operate under a solar cover?

Question
many comments say the DX4 has wifi, but the description says no wifi. Can someone pls verify? thx
Answer

The Dolphin Proteus DX4 has no Wi Fi. You can set it to run daily or Multiple times per a week. You can leave it in the pool but the PH of the pool should be normal. The biggest secret to buying a Dolphin cleaner is the on-line Models and the In-store Models look different but or the same. Models with the same features In-store will cost more.

Question
This pool cleaner can be used in above ground pool?
Answer

Check the manufacturer's web site, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only issue would making sure the cord from the control block doesn't get stuck going over the side of the pool. It would be no issue if the pool had any deck around it. Just put the control block on the deck. If no deck, put all the cord into the pool before starting the cleaning cycle.

Question
Will thw dx5i qork on concrete bottom pools?
Answer

Yes, Dolphin Proteus works on concrete, and fiberglass pools. It works very great. I bought the DX4 which has both front and back roller brushes to scrub and brush debris into the collection basket. And the DX4 also has both elements for the collection basket which I liked. The regular basket and also the extra filter elements that remove finer particles. That extra filtering element could be ordered separately for the DX3 for $99/ So with the DX4 both sets of filters were included. Check the DX5 to make sure those are included. Also, I did a comparison of the DX3, DX4 and DX5. I found the DX4 was what I needed and a bit less money than the DX5.

Question

Does this machine jam if sweeping small sticks or palm fronds?
Answer

Nope it shouldn’t ....i find pine sticks all the time in our vaccum basket and small pieces of the palm leaves, once i even found a small shark torpedo in it and the machine was ok. The mouth of the suction is decent size. So seemes like thickness of the debris would be less of an issue than length of the debris. Hope this helps

Question
If you use the automatic programming you need to leave it in your pool
Answer

Yes. If you use the automatic programming, you will need to leave the Dolphin in the pool and leave it plugged into the power outlet so it can start on its own the next time you wish it to clean the pool. I prefer to remove the machine from the pool after each cycle and clean it so as to extend the life of the machine and the filter screens.

Question
What's the difference between this and the active 20 series?
Answer

I have no idea. I know at my pool store they have different models & this is not one they carry. I bought this one because I didn't want to spend a thousand dollars & the only difference in this model is it doesn't. have all the bells &. whistles that the more expensive models have. I've had this a couple of months & it does an excellent job of cleaning. I do wish it had a "lift" button but it still cleans great. I would recommend this one if you are not wanting to spend a lot of money. They all clean the same, in my opinion.

Question
Has anyone encountered the front end of the robot floating up versus staying to the pool floor?
Answer

I have not had this problem. I work mine pretty hard during pool openings and it has held up so far.

Question
Will it pick up the dirt laying right in a 90 angle or does it move over it and climb the wall with out picking it up right at the pool wall/floor?
Answer

It didn’t clean the walls well, missing strips at a time. It also didn’t do well cleaning the edges at the 90 degree angle, just rolled over dirt. We have since purchased a Polaris 9550 which works great. We had an earlier Polaris model for 8 years that worked great but it finally died. The newer technology is even better. We are so happy we went back to the Polaris.

My dx4 stop working, how do I reset it?

I do not know if you are having the same problem that I have had, so I am not sure my solution will help. In any event, you probably already tried it because, when mine stopped, all I did was unplug it, plug it back in and pressed the start button. This has happened twice and has worked twice.

Answer

Easy with a push of the button

Question
Can the proteus dx3 be left in the pool in between cleanings? I had read that it should be removed when adding chemicals such as pool shock.
Answer

I take my DX4 out when adding chemicals per instructions. Maybe overly cautious but I assume a strong concentration of chemicals could degrade materials like rubber, etc. But this is also true of other parts of your system - valve O rings, & gaskets can be degraded by adding shock through the skimmer, for example.

Question
I have a beach entry pool. Will it keep going out of the water or shut down?
Answer

It climbs my walls of the pool so I would imagine if it could just keep on going it would. As long as the cord reaches it’s going to go.

Answer

I don’t know the exact cost. I have a pool that is about 15 years old and running the DX5i for 2 hours get the pool cleaner than running the pool with pop-ups. The power supply is rated at 120 watts, so would draw that much electricity for 2 hrs to do a full cycle of the cleaner

Can you set a weekly timer, like every mon & thu? my old dolphin had to be reset every week
Answer

I have the dolphin #4 & I can program it if I want, so The five does it also plus you can use your smart phone to steer. Pretty crazy right? Don’t forget if you program it, it has to stay in the water and plugged in. That doesn’t work for me, with grandkids, so I just drop it in when needed. Hope this helps.

How well does the dx4 pick up leaves?
Answer

Mine picked up a clear, thin plastic protector that was left on the lens of a child’s goggles when they went in the pool. It also picked up beach sand, roof shingle grit, small leaves and eyelash-sized debris from a nearby tree that’s outside the pool cage. Very happy with mine.
